Lessons Learned

I recently took pictures for my friend Anita and her family and learned a lot after their session. We went out to the sunflower fields but unfortunately it had been raining for two days straight and all of the flowers were pointing towards the ground. It was hot, humid, and REALLY sunny. I went home afterward feeling really defeated because I knew it wasn’t my best work. I was so disappointed that I hadn’t gotten better pictures for them. So here are some things I learned that day:

  • make sure your camera lens isn’t fogged up or the first 10 pictures will be blurry
  • taking pictures at 11am is probably one of the worst times of day ever
  • asking a squirmy, hungry toddler to stay still for pictures is nearly impossible
  • find shade…and stay there!
  • always pack your external flash to compensate for shadows
  • no amount of editing will make up for bad pictures
  • pay closer attention to how people pose themselves
  • relax, try and enjoy yourself, and make the most of what you’ve got!

See what happens when your lens is foggy from the humidity? Ugh! And those shadows!

So, in the end I still feel like we got a few cute shots but definitely not near enough the quantity I would like to give a client. Even though I was disappointed in my work, I felt like this was a good learning experience and that’s exactly what I need in order to become a better photographer. I hope they will give me another chance in the fall and that I can take what I learned and apply it towards future sessions. In the meantime, I will just keep practicing as much as possible!
